Tall Ships® Tacoma Welcomes Three More Ships
Replica of the “Nina” to attend event

January 09, 2008

TACOMA – Jan. 9, 2008 – Three more ships have agreed to participate in Tall Ships® Tacoma 2008, bringing the total confirmed number of ships to 18.

Almost two-thirds of the vessels expected to participate in the maritime event have now confirmed.

One of the ships, the Nina, is destined to be a crowd-pleaser – it is a replica of the ship on which Christopher Columbus sailed when he discovered the new world.

“We are very excited about the addition of these three ships, and are especially pleased about the Nina’s participation.  They agreed to come less than a month after we invited them” said Bob Bearden, director of Waterside Operations.

Nina. The Nina is the first historically correct replica of a 15th Century Caravel. Master shipbuilders in Brazil built the ship using design and construction techniques of the 15th Century. She is a sailing museum providing people an opportunity to visit one of the greatest little ships in world history.

Rejoice. The Rejoice is a two-masted staysail schooner from La Conner, Washington. She was built in 1931 and was donated to the La Conner Sea Scout Program in 1992.

Yankee Clipper. Built in 1927 as Cressida, the Yankee Clipper was one of the only armor-plated private yachts in the world. In 1965 she joined the Windjammer Fleet and was christened Yankee Clipper. Her homeport is Seattle.

A list of invited and confirmed ships is available on the Tall Ships® Tacoma website.

State Farm Presents Tall Ships® Tacoma 2008 will be held July 3-7, 2008. More than 30 historic sailing vessels are expected to attend the event along the Thea Foss Waterway. Tickets to board the vessels or sail on an excursion will go on sale in early 2008. For more information, visit www.tallshipstacoma.com.
